Marilyn Interview Video Breakdown of a Breakdown

Subject

Marylin Monroe

Description

Within the first 30 seconds you can see that this is mainly about Marylin however, you are aware that she isn't alone because the set is not quiet.

She refers to herself as a former model, implying that she is now an actress. I wonder how that influenced the rest of the interview. She does speak very slowly but not with any precision. She seems to be at a loss for words. Maybe distracted or nervous that she may say something wrong.

I think that the pressure to maintain her desirable image must have been exhausting. It seems as though the interviewer doesn't respect Marylin much. He talks to her like she is a child. I don't blame him though considering her responses are so slow and childish. Maybe it's not the child-like sensibility that causes him to talk to her that way. She clearly admits that she has done more work modeling for the covers of mens' magazines than other types of magazines like those that may appeal to a female audience.

Once the attention has been drawn to the setting of the interview, the kitchen, Amy then decides they better leave. All comments on the room were positive so perhaps she decided to move into another room for an another opportunity to show off another nice room in their home. Maybe she feels a sense of competition with Marylin. Maybe she wants to have some credit even though the interview is for Marylin and her husband, she seems to make sure she has her place in the interview process.
When they move into the den the dynamic changes a bit more. Amy ad Marylin take the couch while Milton sets up behind his wife. He uses the shift to appear in the background rather than be in the forefront. I think this is why his response is so scattered. I think he seems shy and like he isn't interested in talking about himself or his business.

Marylin gives away clues about her personality by the way she presents herself. She sits comfortably on the couch next to Amy and tucks her legs up and begins to gently stroke her shin. She seems so comfortable and Amy adjusts herself into a similar position however she shifts her frame toward Marylin. She seems to disregard her husband behind her who also makes a shift in his seat at this point. He doesn't move into a dominant position though. He remains in the background.

Marylin is clearly an animal lover. Something she must share with Amy which becomes apparent when you see the way they share the dog in front of them. Both of them are petting the dog and spending much of their attention on the dog situated between them in front of the couch.

She is asked about her fame and her general character and she plays coy. She explains that she is able to get through NYC without being recognized. At one point she looks stupid because she is asked if she is disappointed that she keeps playing the same role. She basically doesn't acknowledge that she does and she goes on sloooowly to say what roles she would like to play. And when she's finished, with pride, she sits up and says I think that covers it. Probably because she named all other roles.. This makes her seem even sillier.

Overall tone is Marylin being aloof and kind of unidentifiable to fans. She remains to be viewed as a spectacle throughout the interview.
