1. Nicolas Minovicis Hanging Studies (1905)
In order to find out what happens when somebody is hanged Roumanian forensic scientist Nicolas Minovici advised an assistant to hang him and some of his collaborators - 12 times.
Minovici was well aware of the danger the experiments represented. But he seemed to have had a distinctive propensity for reality as he advised his assistants to pull the rope until his feet were one to two meters above ground.
2. One year in bed (1986)
It sounds like the ideal job for couch potatoes: in January 1986 11 men went to bed in Moscow - and didn't get up for the next 370 days. This was by far the longest bed rest study ever undertaken.
3. Bullfighting by Remote Control (1964)
Spanish neurologist Jose Delgado from Yale University used a remote control to telecommand a bull during a bull fight.
4. Urine in the Web (1955)
In 1955 psychiatrists at the Friedmatt Sanatorium and Nursing Home in Basle, Switzerland, were trying to diagnose schizophrenia by looking at webs spun by spiders who were administered urine of schizophrenics.
5. Dr fox spouts nonsense (1970)
Can a brilliant speaker so completely bamboozle a group of experts that they overlook the fact that the content is complete nonsense? In a stunning experiment in the 1970ies an actor was trained to deliver a brilliant talk but saying basically nothing. The experts in the audience didn't notice it.
6. Three times jesus (1959)
What happens if you bring three men together who all think they are Jesus? American psychologist Milton Rokeach tried it. The three Christs of Ypsilanti as they soon became called lived for two years together in the State Psychiatric Clinic at Ypsilanti near Detroit. Rokeach hoped the confrontation with each other would cure them.
But each of them found a perfect reason why the other two were impostors. One of the explanations was disarmingly logical: the two others couldn’t be Jesus because they were self-evidently patients in a psychiatric institution.
7. Would you go to bed with me tonight? (1978)
In Summer 1978 a man approached women on the campus of Florida State University saying: "I have been noticing you around campus. I find you to be very attractive. Would you go to bed with me tonight?" Some days later a woman went around with the same question for men. Guess what they said!
8. Good Friday on Drugs (1962)
On Good Friday 1962 researcher Walter Pahnke administered 10 theology mind altering drugs before the church service - with surprising consequences. Even 25 years after the experiment the test subjects - a lot of them became priests - described the Good Friday service of 1962 as one of the high points in their spiritual lives.
9. Crucifixion research (1984)
How can you find out how Jesus died? You do an experiment! That's exactly what phathologist Frederick Zugibe did. He let himself build a cross an hung volunteers from it.
10. Dogbot VS. real dog (2003)
In 2003 researchers tried to find out whether dogs would accept Sony's commercial dogbot AIBO as one of their own. That didn't go well for the dog bot.
